Depends on which housing area you are looking at. Are you talking about the housind west of 163 (Serra Mesa) or east of 15 (Tierra Santa). I think Tierra Santa is probably better. Neither is fantastic. For a great district you would have to live outside of military housing in the Poway Unified or other good district.

The military housing in Murphy Canyon is good. It is in Serra Mesa and a nice adjacent community called Tierrasanta. Not very far from Murphy Canyon housing is Walmart, Fry’s Electronics, billions of furniture stores in Clairemont Mesa, and tons of restaurants. You are close to every thing from Murphy Canyon, freeway access is good, the schools are above average, and again, Tierrasanta is an excellent neighborhood.

The Military housing is a small portion of Tierrasanta, but you also have Kearny Mesa, Clairemont, and Mission Valley within a 5 to 10 minute radius by car. DMV in Clairemont, for someone new to San Diego this is probably a prime location where you are almost centrally located. Shoot the beach is only 20 minutes away by car also from Murphy Canyon.
