What is the commute like from central san diego to Carlsbad?

Question by Kobe: What is the commute like from central san diego to Carlsbad?
I’m probably gonna live either in Pacific Beach, Clairemont, or somewhere in that area and I’ll be working in an office park off of palomar airport road. Can anyone tell me about the commute and how long it takes? Is it really bad?

it depends on the time of day. If you’re traveling during the heavy traffic hours (7am to about 9:30am headed north and then again from about 3pm to about 7pm headed south) traffic is a pain in the @$ $ .

Oh and ANY time of day during the Fair season or the racing season is a nightmare.

Otherwise the trip is about 25 minutes.

    Yeah, you’re gonna be screwed.

    One word: Motorcycle.

Either that, or try finding a place in Encinitas or Solana Beach. It’s an awesome little town. Very laid back.
Maybe Oceanside but only if you have to.

just leaving the PB area in the morning is a bitch… there are two main streets that take you to the freeway… and northbound traffic will be tuff as soon as u carmel valley… i would say plan accordingly and leave about 1 hour earlier

It SUCKS! I don’t care what time of day it is, it can even be a weekend and it’s still slow. I try to never travel the I-5.

Although going northbound in the am and southbound in the pm is better than the reverse directions it’s still going to be bad, no way to characterize it any other way. Especially bad is the traffic loading on to highway 5 from PB as another poster mentioned as well as the other end – Palomar Airport Rd.

Why don’t you move to Encinitas or Carlsbad instead? Better beaches and shorter commute…seems like a no brainer to me.

I live in Pacific Beach and work off of Palomar Airport Road too and have been doing that commute for over 2 years now.

In the morning it takes me about 45 minutes to get from homes to work door to door. There isn’t much to any traffic in the morning heading north. Sometimes it’s a little slow heading up past the 5/52 interchange but never stop and go unless there is a major accident. About 5-10 minutes of the morning is spent waiting in line to get on the freeway at the on ramp. It’s a very busy on ramp and there are metering lights so usually there is a backup. I go the backside and take Bluffside drive instead of Mission Bay Dr. So your mornings aren’t that bad.

In the evening it’s a different story. From about June through Labor Day in September it is horrible for the most part. The Sd County fair and Del Mar races plus all the tourists really make the commute on I-5 south in the evening horrible. It usually takes me at least 45 minutes to as long as 1.5 hours to get home. Usually it’s around an hour. From Sept to May traffic isn’t nearly as bad and many times in great actually. Thursdays and Fridays are always the worst anytime of year, but during many months in fall and winter, there is barely any traffic and I can be home in as little as 30 minutes to an hour at most. It is much more bearable from Sept to Apr/May.

It’s not a fun commute but I enjoy where I live so I do it. Most of the year it’s not too terrible but still a pretty decent commute.
