What neighborhood in San Diego is best to live in if you want to walk and bike most places?

Question by beadgrl: What neighborhood in San Diego is best to live in if you want to walk and bike most places?
I’m moving to San Diego and was wondering if there were any neighborhoods that have basic amenities, job opportunities and entertainment in them so you could walk or bike and not have to depend on using your car as much. Also, what neighborhoods can you rent a one or two bed for under $ 1000 a month that are safe?

Obviously a non-black, non-mexican neighborhood.

I would say La Jolla, but yoy wouldnt be able to afford it if you are looking to spend under $ 1000, there is really no place to live that you will be able to bike to work, i mean it is San Diego, you need a car for sure!!

LOTS of options here… It will mostly depend on where you work and what style neighborhood you like. You could find small beach area units in Mission and Ocean Beach but they are not convenient to most employment (except for local retail/resturant). You could live around Balboa Park – I like the South Park and Bankers Hill areas, and they are also convenient to downtown. You could also live in the Mission Valley area and where there are better, newer complexes and lots of commuting options (like the trolley) and good bike paths running to the beach areas.

Ocean Beach or Hillcrest: best San Diego neighborhoods, hands down. OB is the bicycle-friendlier of the two. Hillcrest has Balboa Park, tons of restaurants, and both the Goldfinch and University Heights libraries. OB’s got its beautiful pier and Dog Beach. Both offer quick freeway access and are centrally located generally. Unlike heavy-thru-traffic La Jolla, Ocean Beach is a cul de sac and markedly more laid back.

    Enjoy.
